  • 8 oz elbow macaroni Classic choice for mac and cheese

Cheese

  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese Provides a punchy, tangy flavor

Sauce Ingredients

  • 4 cups milk Creates the base for the cheese sauce
  • 1/4 cup butter For making the roux

  • 1 tsp garlic powder Adds depth to the flavor
  • 1 tsp onion powder Enhances flavor profile
  • to taste salt and pepper Essential for seasoning

Topping (Optional)

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs Adds a crunchy texture on top

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Boil water in a large pot. Cook the elbow macaroni until al dente according to package instructions. Drain and rinse with cold water to stop the cooking process.

Making the Cheese Sauce

  • In a large pot, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until it turns a light golden brown.
  • Gradually add milk, whisking constantly until it thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon.
  • Add garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Stir well.
  • Mix in the shredded sharp cheddar and Monterey Jack until smooth.

Combining and Baking

  • Gently fold in the cooked macaroni until fully coated with cheese sauce.
  • Pour into a greased baking dish. Optionally, sprinkle breadcrumbs on top.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until bubbly and golden.

Finishing Touch

  • Let it cool for about 5 minutes before serving to avoid burning your tongue.

Notes

Using freshly shredded cheese allows for a smoother melt. Experiment with different cheeses for unique flavors. This dish is also make-ahead friendly and can be frozen for future meals.
