Casserole Base

  • 1 loaf loaf of bread (preferably brioche or challah) Choose bread that can soak up custard without falling apart.
  • 4 large large eggs Essential for custardy texture.
  • 2 cups milk Whole milk preferred for creaminess.
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream Adds richness to the custard.
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar Adjust according to sweetness preference.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Enhances flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Can substitute nutmeg for variation.
  • 1 cup strawberries (sliced) For added sweetness and color.
  • 1 cup blueberries Adds sweetness and a pop of color.
  • to taste Butter (for greasing the dish) Ensures the casserole doesn't stick.
  • to serve Maple syrup For drizzling.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter.
  • Cut the loaf of bread into 1-inch cubes and place in the baking dish.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon.
  • Pour the mixture over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are coated.
  • Add the sliced strawberries and blueberries on top of the bread.
  • Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.

Baking

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes.
  • Bake the casserole for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden and the egg is set.
  • Allow to cool slightly before serving. Drizzle with maple syrup if desired.

Notes

Use stale bread for better soaking. Adjust sweetness as needed. You can add nuts, other fruits, or even a citrus splash for a twist.
